Building Stone Types

The range of building stones available from around the world can present a daunting problem to a client, what to choose?

CWO can help with that choice, whether it be limestone, sandstone, marble, slate, flint or granite we have a vast experience to advise and guide you.

CWO have a stock of many of the British limestones, sandstones, flints and slate, along with several European sandstones and limestones, we do not have our own quarries for building stone and so are free to select whatever stone is the most suitable for your project.

The selection of the building stone for a project is one of the most important decisions a client can make, this choice will fundamentally affect the appearance and character of the building. For example limestones and marbles are generally lighter in colour and suit more formal designs, whereas sandstones and flint can promote a more rustic character, granites and slate could be more gothic. The suitability with regard to weathering and wearing must also be taken into consideration. And so great care must be taken in the selection process, with our experience CWO can help our clients to search for and negotiate their way through the vast range of building stones available to choose the one that suits their needs.

This selection process must involve visits to the quarries producing the stone to enable the client to fully appreciate the full range of the building stone they are considering, CWO regularly arrange these visits with our clients and again our experience is invaluable in helping a client to negotiate with the quarries to secure the best building stone for their project.
